- Water Pump
-
- There are several
- water pump designs,
- but most are of the
- centrifugal type.
- In the centrifugal
- water pump, a
- rotating impeller
- forces coolant
- throughout the
- engine. A fan may
- be installed on the
- water pump shaft.
- Impeller type water
- pumps must rotate
- rapidly to be
- effective. A worn
- or loose belt
- allows slippage
- which can not
- always be detected.
- Pulley alignment
- may also cause a
- problem.
-
- Spring loaded seals
- pressed into the
- housing prevents
- coolant leakage
- around the pump
- shaft. Today's
- pumps are outfitted
- with pre-packed
- ball bearings.
- These are sealed at
- each end and do not
- require periodic
- lubrication.
- Although most pumps
- run on sealed ball
- bearings, and the
- shaft is sealed
- from the housing,
- water pumps may
- sometimes need
- replacement. Water
- sand and grit can
- wear the impeller
- blades and pump
- housing. Also, the
- sealing surfaces
- may be worn enough
- to leak air or
- water.
